CFP – Buffy and the Bible

SIIBS and Sheffield Gothic are delighted to announce a two day interdisciplinary conference: ‘Buffy and the Bible’ which will take place at the University of Sheffield on 4-5th July 2019. Part of the Gothic Bible Project, and following our inaugural Gothic Bible conference in 2017 (which you can read all about here) ‘Buffy and the Bible’ will take the hit show Buffy the Vampire Slayer (1997-2003) as a case study to interrogate the relationship between religion and popular culture, and we welcome papers and posters that explore this theme in any aspect of the Buffyverse. This can be broadly interpreted, and can focus on anything from religious and biblical themes, tropes, characters, aesthetics, spaces and more (see the Call For Papers below for more details). Scholars from any and all disciplines – and Buffy fans – are welcome!

Deadline for submissions is 18th March 2019.

Though the conference will be hosted in Sheffield, ‘Buffy and the Bible’ is a collaborative project that draws together scholars from the University of Sheffield, Kingston University, the University of York, and independent scholars across a range of disciplines who all share a passion for Buffy the Vampire Slayer and an interest in exploring the show academically. Follow the #BiblicalBuffy hashtag and the @GothicBible twitter to keep up to date.

The conference team is thrilled to welcome Professor Matthew Pateman (Head of the Media Department at Edge Hill University) as our keynote speaker.

2019 announcements:

Venue:  We are thrilled that the venue for Buffy and the Bible will be the Gothic deconsecrated St. George’s Church. It’ll be sure to give you the wiggins!

Registration: The registration fee for the conference will be £15. Due to support received from WRoCAH we are able to offer a small amount of travel bursaries (up to £15 pp) for students and ECRs in the UK. These are offered on the basis of need; you can apply for these bursaries when registration opens.

Sing-a-long screening and discussion:  Finally, we are, like, so totally delighted to announce that we will be hosting a sing-a-long screening of the groundbreaking musical episode Once More with Feeling on the evening of July 4th. This screening will be accompanied by a discussion led by the conference organisers (details TBC) and a drinks reception. Conference tickets will include access to this event, but you can chose to buy a ticket for the screening on its own if you wish to.  Five by five, am I right?!

We are very pleased to have been awarded funding from The White Rose College of the Arts & Humanities (WRoCAH) and the Arts and Humanities Research Council (AHRC) to host this conference.
